A network architect will face many issues when designing a network. This paper examines a selection of network designs and operational security best practices designed to overcome such issues, describing how they are beneficial, based on both the author’s assumptions and substantial secondary research. Several proprietary best practices from commercial organisations, including Cisco (networking methodologies) and Citrix (intrusion detection systems), were selected for evaluation based on the companies’ proposals of what best practice might look like for their customers.
