Call for Papers

The call for submissions is now open for Seven Bridges. The current deadline for submissions is the end of January.

The Editorial Board seeks papers from a range of disciplines at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Submissions from the following areas will be eagerly received:

  • Business & Management
  • Sport & Exercise
  • Engineering
  • Education
  • Applied Science
  • Computing
  • Health & Social Care
  • Creative Practice

Potential authors are advised to contact the Editorial Board in the first instance to discuss the suitability of their proposal prior to submission. If you are unsure about the suitability of your paper due to the subject content, please consult the editorial team prior to submitting it.

Guidance

Submissions should be in a Word file (.doc or .docx), using single spacing and Arial 12pt font. Citations should appear in a bibliography in the Harvard style. All authors must consent to publication.

It is expected that articles will normally not exceed 4,000 words, excluding the bibliography. Literature reviews should not exceed 1500 words but should otherwise conform to the guidelines. On occasion, the Editor may accept submissions of longer pieces with the agreement of the Editorial Board.

Authors are advised to use a clear style, minimising jargon where possible. Technical terms and acronyms should be clearly defined. UK spellings should be used, unless they form part of a quotation.

Submissions should include the following:

  1. Title page with full title and subtitle (if any).
  2. Abstract of 100-150 words.
  3. Logically organised text, with a clear hierarchy of headings and subheadings.
  4. Quotations exceeding 40 words should be displayed indented, within the text.
  5. End notes, if necessary, should be signalled by superscript numbers in the main text and listed at the end of the text before the references.
  6. References should follow Harvard style.
  7. A bibliography must follow the text (and end notes if any), using the Harvard style.

Tables should be provided as separate documents and their position indicated by a marginal note in the text. All tables should have short descriptive captions with footnotes and their source(s) typed below the tables.

All line diagrams and photographs are termed ’Figures’ and should be referred to as such in the manuscript. They should be numbered consecutively. Line diagrams should be presented in a form suitable for immediate reproduction (i.e. not require redrawing), each in a separate document. Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions from copyright holders for reproducing any illustrations, tables, figures or lengthy quotations previously published elsewhere. Permission letters must be supplied to the Editorial Board via the Editors.

Single quotation marks should be used. Dates will be presented in the form 5 July 2013. Points should not be used in abbreviations, contractions or acronyms (e.g. USA, RSPCA, PhD).

Guidance for Creative Submissions

This year will see the development of a new branch of the academic journal, Seven Bridges: Creative. This new branch will see student’s creative work being given the same credence as the written academic work from other subject areas. The submission process will be similar to the call for papers for traditional academic writing. Students will submit a short biography (no more than 500 words), artist’s statement (no more than 300 words), and a portfolio of 5 to 10 images. The work will then be peer reviewed through a group crit process before successful candidates are selected.
